Peanut Butter Pie & A U-haul.

Our trip started at 5:00 a.m. when the alarm went off on Saturday May 12th. With only 4 and a half hours of sleep, we pulled ourselves out of "bed," a queen size air mattress. I slept in my travel clothes to minimize morning preparations and decided to forgo any makeup or fancy hair style. Our dear friends Jessica and Tim Robertson insisted on getting up early and seeing us off. Jessica made us fresh, blueberry muffins, which was really thoughtful and touched my heart. At 6:25 we closed the door on the Doric, the building we have lived in for 5 years. As the I heard the familiar sound of the door shutting, a surge of nervous excitement pulsed through my body. Tim and Jess prayed for us; we prayed for them. We said our good-byes. Brandon drove the U-haul with his car in tow, and I drove my Escort Wagon, with the cats in their pet carrier. The sun was just beginning to rise on a new day, a new season, a new chapter in the Wilhite household.

Brandon and I communicated via walkie-talkies. I kept a sharp eye on the car and dolly, looking out for any unnecessary wiggles. About 2 hours into our trip, we came upon a detour, one of about 4 detours, which felt like 10! It took us 6 hours to get out of the state of Indiana, which normally would only take about 3 and a half! Our cats were having a hard time traveling. Tilly had an accident, causing another stop with clean up. As we traveled down the interstate, I realized that we were driving down the road with all of our belongs, everything we owned. Humbling.

After a 10 hour trip which normally only took 7 and a half hours, we arrived in Williamsburg, Kentucky, my home town. We immediately drove to the storage unit and unloaded, with help from my dad and brother. Funny how unloading did not take nearly as long as loading!!

On Sunday May 13th, we drove to Corbin, Kentucky to return the U-haul to a renter there: McClure's Auto. As we did the final paperwork, Mr. McClure insisted that he feed us. He and his wife and friends were having their Sunday lunch. There was a huge spread of chicken 'n dumplins, fried chicken, veggies and desserts. We explained that we were headed back to my folks' house for Mother's day dinner, and that we should NOT show up with full tummies. He persisted and gave us pie. I had a slice of peanut butter pie; Brandon had a slice of cherry delight. We each were given big glasses of milk to wash down the ooey-gooey richness!! Mr. McClure walked me through his original recipe, ingredients and process. One of his friends said the next time we rent a U-haul, we should not expect such yummy eats and hospitality!! This was a wonderful Southern welcome home!

With only one day of rest, I started my new job on Monday, May 14th.

We have been here just barely over a week now, and are living with my folks until the house we plan to rent will be available and ready for us. Two more weeks. Work is different. I am working in a law office, which is something I have never done before. I am learning a lot and find it all to be interesting. Brandon has set up his office at my folks' house. Tilly and LiLa (lee-lah), our cats, were shell shocked for a while, but LiLa is really enjoying being in the country. Tilly seems restless, with a few serene moments here and there.

It has not sunk in that we LIVE here. We feel like we are visiting, and that in a few days we will drive back north. It's odd living here, but a good odd. I know that we are steps closer. Closer to having children. Closer to Brandon's business really taking off. Closer to building our dream home. Closer.

Our Last Day on Chestnut Street

Yesterday was a whirl wind of loading the truck and cleaning. We had several friends help out, which was a HUGE blessing. People came in shifts, so there were fresh muscles and energy for moving. Last night we slept on a queen size air mattress. This morning we woke up with sore, stiff bodies, but much optimism. Last minute packing of our suit cases and miscellaneous items that seemed to allude the boxes they were suppose to go in. I was going to fry the last two eggs this morning for breakfast, then realized I had no skillet... no microwave to prepare any food, which may seem inconvenient, but is an inconvenience I am willing to deal with!!

We found out last week that the building that we live in is probably going to be sold. The owners will most likely renovate. This building is over 100 years old, has very drafts windows, is not wired for modern electricity use, and is overall crumbling. We like this place, and have enjoyed our 5 years here, but we are happy to move on to our new season of life. And, it would be nice to see this building restored!

Ok, well... this is it! Our last day... Whoo Hooo!!

See you on the other side!

5 Days and a Wake Up!

Today is Monday. We leave on Saturday!! Whoo Hoo! The apartment is about 85% ready to load up in the truck. Brandon is taking off this week, so we will both be off work to pack and load up. My best friend Cindy and her husband Kevin threw a going away cook-out bash for us on Saturday. I hope to get some pictures up on this site as soon as I can. It may take a week or two!! I also hope to get some pictures of the mountains and where we will be living... Coming Soon!

One Way to Kentucky.

A couple of weeks ago, I scheduled a Uhaul truck for our move. We were planning to pack it on Friday, drive down to Kentucky, then take the truck back on Sunday. After all, we are paying for 3 days. However, since my amazing hubby announced at the beginning to this week that he is taking next week off to help pack, load and clean, we decided that we want to have the truck available to us for 2 days to pack and only one day for the drive and move. I called the Uhaul place today. He confirmed my reservation by saying, "One way to Kentucky, right?" I answered with a hearty, "Yes!"

Then it hit me.

Wow. We really are moving. One way to Kentucky. We are closer to my family, closer to our mission that God has given us, closer to getting a Whippet puppy, closer to having babies! Closer.

This year -- we begin our year on June 9th, our anniversary. The Wilhite calendar year goes from June 9 of one year to June 8 of the next. Like so: June 9, 2006 to June 8, 2007 has been year 6; we celebrate 6 years this June 9th, and will begin year 7. (It makes sense to us!) This year (beginning last June) has been a rough year. Several different times we thougtht we were going to move, had jobs, housing lined up... or we were interviewing or job searching, changing jobs, etc.

We are very ready to settle in to the quiet life...

One way to Kentucky...

9 Days and a Wake Up!

Eight days and a wake up until the big move! We pull out early on Saturday May 12th. I have been packing like a mad fool all week. Everything is slowly, but surely, making its way into a box or plastic container, or into a box to go to GoodWill, which I have to say is quite cathartic. I am enjoying the simplicity of the minimal items that are left. When we move into the HOUSE (praise God for a HOUSE!), I plan to continue to get rid of superfluous items that just cause me mental anguish. It is amazing how hanging on to STUFF can cause one to feel burdened. Sometimes I want to live like the Japanese in the Kung Fu movies... like in the Japanese village in the movie The Last Samurai. There is practically NOTHING in any room. Ok, so that might be a bit extreme, but if I could just find a balance...

Also, in a week from Monday I will start my new job. I will be working as a secretary in a law firm. My boss is a friend of mine from high school. (I'll refer to him as BossMan) BossMan and I grew up together. His brother and my brother are the same age, so we all knew each other really well. BossMan has had his firm for almost a year now. Seems like every time I tell some one I will be working in a law firm, visions of Law and Order dance through their heads and they say, "Oooh, wow! Good for you!" The pay is waaaay less than what they think, and I am sure not nearly as glamorous. However, I plan to do my very best, and help him build up his firm. My pay will increase as his business increases, so that is incentive for me to work hard. I also feel it is a mission field, at least at this time. Well, any place with people is a mission field, but I feel more of a spiritual tugging when I think about working there. Its an odd feeling, but I know more will be revealed in time...

We will be living one mile from where I will be working. I plan to commit to walking to and from work this summer. I know this might sound crazy, but Brandon and I walk almost three miles (ok, not every day...), and it is not a hard walk. So, I figure one mile (down hill) in the morning and one mile (up hill) in the evening will help my body and mind. Also, it will save gas! Have you seen the prices of gas lately!! Oh my word! Fortunately, Brandon works at home and if I am walking to work, that should really, really save on gas! Everything else we need is with in a 10 mile radius, so hopefully we can really save on gas this summer!

I only plan to be available to sub for two days next week, then I will be off to finish packing and cleaning. Brandon announced last night that he will be taking next week off to help pack and clean. What a man! I looooove that he is his own boss! He works so very hard. I am so proud of him; I get warm fuzzies when I think about all he has, is and will accomplish! He is a man of tenacious strength and courage. He is my Champion!

I'm off to pack boxes, rearrange boxes, and clean around boxes! Today is a good day!
